One of a Kind Table Top
Figured Maple Dining Set
For this project, I was determined to craft an exceptional dining set for a returning client in the Bellingham area. Together, we envisioned a dining set that would be both visually stunning and unique, designed to be the centerpiece of their dream retirement home and an heirloom piece to be passed on for generations.
Final Design Rendering Submitted to the Client
We settled on a contemporary trestle table design featuring wedged tenons in Koa to secure the base—a detail inspired by subtle Japanese aesthetics. Once I presented a final design that fully resonated with my client, the next step was sourcing the perfect materials.

The table base and chair materials were relatively easy to source, and this part of the project came together smoothly.

However, finding enough of the figured maple for such a large tabletop was a significant challenge. My client and I were committed to creating something special, which led us on a thorough search for the perfect material. We were set on highly figured local maple, but the limited availability of suitable pieces proved difficult as time went on.
Final Maple Board Selected for Re-Sawing
To achieve a flawless, unified look across the large tabletop surface, I decided to create my own shop-made veneer. While I greatly appreciate solid wood furniture, this technique allowed me to showcase one extraordinary piece of wood while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic throughout the tabletop. By re-sawing a single board of maple—into 12 ‘slices’, each ⅛" thick, I had just enough material to cover the main body of the large tabletop.
Re-sawing Process on Bandsaw
Shop-made veneers offered several advantages over commercial options. They allow me greater control in creating a seamless, continuous grain pattern to enhanced the harmony of the piece. Additionally, the thicker veneers allow for future resurfacing if necessary. With careful layout and planning, I achieved a design that looked and functioned as beautifully as a solid wood tabletop.
Final Layout of Re-sawn Veneers for Table Top
Crafting this tabletop required a range of skills and specialized tools. The process involved meticulous planning, precise re-sawing, and building a stable substrate. I used a vacuum press to ensure the veneers adhered flawlessly. To elevate the design, I incorporated matching solid wood for the edges and breadboard ends, adding both durability and a seamless transition to the tabletop's veneered surface.
Table Top After Finishing Process
This dining set stands as proof that exceptional results emerge from thoughtful planning and embracing challenges. In the end, it’s more than just a dining table—it’s a story woven with creativity, skill, and a deep reverance for the natural beauty of wood.
